Lammersville Unified School District
Mountain House, CA
More students, more seating
California’s Mountain House community saw extraordinary growth over several years, and with it came an influx of new students to the Lammersville Unified School District (LUSD). New schools were filling up as fast as they could be built, with families flocking to one of the state’s 2019 Exemplary School Districts. While this made Superintendent Kirk Nicholas “very proud,” the rapid growth meant the district was sprinting to keep up.
In light of the unprecedented boom, and with two new buildings on deck, LUSD needed a partner who would take ownership of the learning space design process and communicate proactively every step of the way — something that had not happened with previous partners. The district selected Demco to help, citing the team’s clear process, consistent follow-up, and reliable follow-through as qualities they wanted during their upcoming fast-paced projects.
“The quality of the furniture, the install, and particularly the customer service has been excellent. Shawna and her team are detail-oriented, timely, and most importantly, deliver[ed] what was promised.”
— Thorsten Harrison, Associate Superintendent, LUSD
A project with purpose
The new Julius Cordes Elementary School has room for up to 775 K–8 students in 31 classrooms, as well as a music room, a multipurpose room, and a makerspace. Comfort and adaptability were top priorities throughout the campus. Some of the furniture in the district’s existing schools was well-liked, so Demco worked with vendors to acquire similar pieces at a budget-friendly price. When students saw their new spaces, they were delighted with an inspiring learning environment featuring room to collaborate and explore. Classrooms include flexible seating options like Kore™ Wobble Stools, Smith System® Oodle® Seating, and Smith System® Interchange® Tables on casters to easily rearrange the workspace. Common spaces include Demco ColorScape® Tiered Seating and KI® Sway Chairs that feel weightless and look modern.
Beyond classrooms
LUSD also built a new Professional Development Center to serve as a training headquarters and provide a comfortable workspace for the district’s full-time staff. The sprawling campus includes a welcoming reception area; large training rooms with comfortable, flexible seating for all-day events of any kind; shared office space that adapts for focused individual work or team projects; private offices and conference rooms; and more.
From discontinued to delighted
One major roadblock arose when selected furniture was discontinued. Demco pivoted quickly to find an alternative that offered the same features and quality at a comparable price, working through additional challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure the products were delivered in time for installation. Throughout every change, the customer service team kept LUSD informed.
Installation for LUSD included nine semi-truck trailers of furniture; 15 members of a local professional crew; 10 days of assembly, setup, and waste removal; and an end-of-project walkthrough that found only a single ripped flag to be replaced. Even working across the country, Demco delivered exactly what LUSD needed: high-quality communication, creative problem-solving, and top-tier products — on time and under budget.
